Shedding Light on the Turman Surname: A Personal Journey into DNA Testing with iGENEA

Family name Turman

Delving into an advanced DNA test with iGENEA provided far-reaching insights into my genealogical history, particularly my surname Turman. Using a combination of Autosomal, Y-chromosome, and mitochondrial DNA tests, I pieced together my genetic ancestry and correlated it to my surname's roots.

My initial exploration into the DNA testing with iGENEA has been highly enlightening, offering a wealth of new information about my genealogical history. The accuracy of this test is rooted in its technology. iGENEA uses an Autosomal DNA (atDNA) test, targeting 700,000 markers in the body to draw a comprehensive image of a person’s genetic lineage.

The company’s Y-DNA (Y-chromosome DNA) and mtDNA (mitochondrial DNA) tests dive into paternal and maternal ancestry, respectively. The Y-DNA test is particularly useful when delving into my Turman lineage, as Y-chromosomes are passed down from father to son virtually unchanged. This meant that my Y-DNA results offer a clear snapshot of the Turman men who have come before me.

The mtDNA test, on the other hand, traces maternal lineage – as mtDNA is passed from a mother to her children, it allows tracing the matrilineal line. However, this was secondary in my investigation into the Turman surname specifically.

The accuracy of my test results is reinforced by iGENEA’s expansive DNA database, which includes over 700,000 profiles. This enabled detailed comparisons with a vast pool of other samples, increasing the reliability of my genetic matches and deepening my insights into ancestry.

The revelation of genetic ties to Northern Europe helped me understand the likely origin of the Turman surname. The surname Turman likely derives from either an occupational or habitational name, most commonly found among communities in Northern Europe.

Now, when I introduce myself as a Turman, I have a deeper understanding of what that means: a lineage that traces back to hardy Northern Europeans, a history etched in my DNA passed down through generations. While the exploration of DNA can be complex, it also is an important tool to understand who we are. We are not just shaped by the environments in which we grow, but also by genetic histories we carry within us.

I. Turman
